The GLOSS system for transformations from plain text to XML

We describe the GLOSS system for parsing and converting text files to XML via an extensible style-sheet language written in XML. GLOSS is intended for

• a. fast input of general XML via text files
• b. processing legacy text formats

GLOSS is currently being used to author mathematical texts in various formats including XHTML+MathML. We shall also mention specific tools available in the GLOSS system for this target format.
